      Software Engineer Interview

      May 18, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Juniper Education (London, England) in May 2021

      Interview

I only attended the 1st stage of the interview process. It was a casual conversation with one of the company's directors and it was supposed to last about 45 mins. The whole time, the interviewer was very serious and therefore the atmosphere of the interview was cold and unfriendly. After about 20 mins, he said that he got all the answers he needed and ended the interview. Just before he ended, however, he asked me where I am from. Which I did find odd, as he was quite cold throughout our conversation. And it sounded as he didn't like that I am not born British. Two days later my agent called me with feedback for my interview. The interviewer related to my agent that he was very concerned about me, whether I was okay. And he found the conversation very difficult, my speech was slurred. Now I must say that I have a slight speech impediment, hence the slurred speech. However, I have been working as a Software Engineer for more than 8 years now and have attended dozens of interviews. Never before I got feedback like that! The feedback just mentioned my slurred speech, nothing at all about my skills, knowledge, or experience discussed. I felt quite upset, as I don't think that my speech impediment should be an obstacle for me getting a job. What's even more unfortunate, however, is that Juniper Education is operating in the Education sphere. And I am concerned about the director's approach and understanding of equality and diversity. I am only glad that I got to know that pretty early in the process, and didn't end up working for a Juniper Education.

Unfortunately this candidate did not demonstrate the level of experience that matched our current requirements. We're sorry that the candidate didn't feel they had a good experience on this occasion, but to characterise the first remotely-held interview as cold and unfriendly is a personal view which we can't address. The interviewer is an extremely experienced senior leader, who is himself not "born British". To suggest that there was an issue about this for us, or that the Company has any issue with equality and diversity is absolutely incorrect and we absolutely refute this. We are proud to have a diverse workforce, particularly in this team, and welcome applicants from all walks of life. We consistently make reasonable adjustments to ensure people can access work in multiple areas of the business. We expressed some concern to the recruitment agent because of genuine concern for the health and wellbeing of the candidate, who did not appear to be engaged in the conversation, amongst other issues. We were not aware of any speech impediment and it would not be an obstacle to employment with Juniper Education.

      Anonymous Interview Candidate

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Juniper Education in Aug 2022

      Interview

I attended just the first stage of the recruitment process, it was a casual discussion about them and about me. Right from the start I noticed that the interviewer was very serios, that was not the problem, but he did not make any move in order to have a relaxed interview, it was very rigid and cold. As I have said, it was a casual talk with no technical problems or production scenarios. When I have received the feedback, I was very surprised that even if I have explained what my role was, what I have done and what I am working on now, he gave a ridiculous feedback, not on what I have mentioned, but on what he thought my responsibilities where, like we never discussed. In the end, I am glad we did not go further, next time I will check the company reviews;)
