      Backend Developer Interview

      Aug 18, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at KOHO (Toronto, ON) in Aug 2020

      Interview

The interview consisted of a phone screen, take home and panel style technical interview. Phone Screen ========== Pretty standard to any other phone screen. You will be asked about your prior experience and interest in the company. You will be provided with information as to the rest of the interview process as well as about the company and culture. Take Home ========= The take home problem was a backend API which will validate and load funds into an account. Expect the take home to take at least a working day (5-8 hours) if you want the provided API to be fully tested, documented and up to the standards defined in the document. Technical Interview Panel =================== During this stage you will meet with two engineers from the company. You will provide your prior experience and then will play a round of developer trivia where you will be tested on various random acronyms that you learned in school. I personally found most of the questions to be irrelevant to the day to day operations of a fullstack engineer. Conclusion ========= I found the entire process to be a complete waste of time as you are expected to spend a few hours on a take home only to try your luck at some developer trivia in the next stage of the interview process. I unfortunately ignored the massive red flag that is a take home assignment. Take my experience as a red flag and don't bother wasting your time with this company.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at KOHO (Toronto, ON) in Apr 2019

      Interview

I applied through AngelList, didn't get matched for about 2 months. The process was as follows: 1. Basic introductory call with CTO to discuss the company and position and my background and fit. 2. Take-home project where you take an input file of transactions for different users at different times and output whether or not the transaction is valid based on pre-defined limits. You get 24 hours to finish and can choose any language (though they're partial to Golang). Easy to complete, but got the assignment 4 hours later than we had agreed on. 3. Interview with two engineers to discuss the project, though, we mostly spent the time discussing my background and experiences (project was pretty straight-forward). Very typical interview, no questions stick out in particular, though there were lot of questions trying to get me to recount very specific problems or experiences in my previous work. After the interview, got a tour of the office before leaving. Didn't hear back for about 2 weeks, so I followed up, only to learn they had just recently completed their process and decided to go with another candidate. Everyone was nice and the office is beautiful. My only issue is the amount of time it took, given how simple the process was. The process from the time of the match was about 6 weeks and seemed as though they didn't much care about my time as I always had to follow up throughout the process in order to keep things moving along. Had I known it would take so long, I may have not even bothered.
