      Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 30, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Khan Academy in Jun 2022

      Interview

The first interview was phone screen. It went well, we discussed previous work experiences and specifically involvement in support related roles as that was an aspect of the role I applied for. They spent quite a bit of time making sure I was comfortable with the non-profit level pay and benefits. The next interview was a video interview and was simply horrific. To start, the interviewer didn't know how to use Google Meet, despite seeming using the technology at work for several years. The hiring manager kept stating they couldn't see or hear me and had an extremely annoyed look on their face the entire time. I explained I could see and hear them and myself, and tried many things to resolve the problem. After 10 minutes the hiring manager realized they had enabled a mode that disabled video and audio on their end and blamed it on a "Google software update". Introductions were skipped to make up for lost time and went into a very high level explanation of the overall team and the technologies they used. They explained that any specifics about the role would be better explained in a later meeting. They then launched into a very old school verbal technical interview, asking me a lot of coding related questions, almost all of which didn't really relate to the data and devops roles I was interested in. I got most of the answers correct, and the interviewer would interrupt me before I finished my explanation and clap and cheer when I got them correct, like someone would with a two year old child or dog. A few times, despite me getting the answer correct, the interviewer explained they would looking for a different, very specific answer because it was "faster" and then would launch into a long drawn out history of the technology that was tangentially related. Upon fact checking these answers afterwards, it was clear none of the solutions he mentioned were actually faster and in some cases were slower... After about 30 minutes of these technical questions we had gone 20 minutes over the scheduled interview time and I cut off the interviewer and said I was leaving as I had other commitments to go to. The interviewer seemed confused and mentioned they would be recommending me for the next round of interviews. I just said I had to go and left the meeting. During the interview there was no time allocated towards explaining specifics of the role or for me to ask questions. I was absolutely disgusted with my experience and encourage engineers to avoid interviewing here. I have never been patronized like that in my entire life and it is shocking that Khan Academy has retained an employee that treats others like that.

      Interview

Phone screen with a recruiter. Then an interviewer with the hiring manager. Rejected despite having more than enough relevant experience and having a "diverse" (in a real way, not just race) professional background, which they supposedly believe in. Hiring manager seemed disengaged and uninterested throughout the process. Might be best to capture their attention by appearing adequately sycophantic.
