I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at LBTBP (Long Beach Township, NJ) in May 2010
Interview
Fill out paperwork. Take CPR Class (1-2 days). Take Emergency Response Class(3-4 days). If you have never been a lifeguard before, take the lifeguard course (4-5 days). All of these are issued by LBTBP. Then the hardest part is the swim test. Every year it goes down. (was 200 years in 2:45 in 2010)
Must pass Ocean Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross CPR and EMR to be able to take two swim tests (200 yards under 3 minutes and 500 meter under 10 minutes) If you are a new hire you're not guaranteed a position even if you pass everything. Interviews directly follow the swim test and are more geared towards the new hires.

Interview
You pass a swim test, as long as you can swim a 200yd test in under 2:40 you are hired. If you take the full 3 minutes they are going to look at other factors such as your age, whether you participated in LIT and how well you did in the American Red Cross courses.
