Their CTO cold e-mailed me. My GitHub had numerous projects based on the same tech stack as theirs and my domain knowledge was a match. There was no code challenge, just an informal conversation with the CTO and an engineer. At the end the CTO asked my salary expectation, I gave him the top of my range, he said he'd get back to me the next day. I didn't hear back. A few days later I e-mailed him a thank you, he replied that my salary expectation was too high. I figured this was a negotiation and wrote back that I'm flexible. He never responded. This was the weirdest recruiting process I've been through.
