      Mechanical Designer Interview

      Jan 21, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Lutron Electronics in Jul 2011

      Interview

I was contracting here for 3 months before I broke my neck. I was replaced in the 7 weeks during my recovery. My boss Sam was a good leader and suggested that I apply for a direct position, it couldn't hurt, it was better than no position. I was called to set up an interview time and we met. I wasn't expecting such a formal interview as I had already known most of my interviewers from my 3 months as a contractor. My interview consisted of 6, one hour blocks, each with a different manager from various departments. It's funny, when the 4th guy showed up, he had a box with the Lutron Logo on it. I thought, "Well if I dont get the job, atleast I'll have a Lutron mug to use while looking thru the want ads". He opened the box and dumped about 20 parts on the table and said, "Go ahead and assemble it". I was in window systems, this was a dimmer switch, totally different departments. I got most of the way thru the puzzle and as I was left with a few, obviously forgotten or misplaced parts, I punctured my thumb on the sharp end of a pop rivet. Blood everywhere, he ran and got the 1st aid kit and that concluded my assembling of the dimmer switch. Finally it was hour 6, and in comes Sam my former boss and his boss Jason to congratulate me and welcome me aboard. It was a great feeling. He was a good boss. PS. Before the 6 hour round-robin started there were 2 mechanical aptitude tests. Lutron prides itself on hiring the best young talent available. I was older than my boss and probably his boss, however, they do pepper in some experienced people like myself to mentor wherever possible.
