I was contacted just hours after applying on Indeed by who would have been my direct manager. We had a brief screening over the phone and he invited me to come in for an interview the next day. I arrived and it was clear that very little preparation for the interview had occurred. I met with four people in total, each seeing my resume for the first time and giving the impression that there was little warning they would be meeting with me. This isn't entirely unusual, but the way it unfolded was very clumsy and sometimes insulting by the manager in charge of the entire team. His questions were poorly thought out and my answers reflected this. He also held a clear bias against someone self-taught in metalsmithing techniques. They also don't seem very aware of how a whole wave of independent metalsmiths is now influencing design trends. This seems to be something industry-wide though. Before I left my would-be direct manager goes ahead and asks me upfront how much I want in salary, and quickly explains benefits and the dress code. He then asks me to come up with a mock sample of email correspondence dealing with customer resolutions by the end of the day and "I'll have an offer letter by Monday." He gave no criteria when I asked for clarification but just to "make something up," and have it emailed to him by the end of the day. Which I did, and received crickets. No response to the thank you email. No response a week later just to check in about the opportunity at all. I'm fairly confident my master's level writing skills and 10+ years in customer service provided an adequate sample. I'm just shocked he spoke to me of an offer letter with such assurance and was then completely ghosted.
