      Senior Web Developer Interview

      Jan 23, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Declined offer

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at MUBI in Jan 2025

      Interview

I recently went through MUBI’s hiring process for a Senior TV Engineer role. While the team was friendly and the interviews were technically relevant, I ultimately felt misled about salary expectations and frustrated by the time invested in the process. The interview process included five rounds (30-45 minutes each) plus a take-home coding task (~6 hours). While the interviews were casual and role-relevant, they lacked structure. There were no major delays, but salary expectations were misunderstood mid-way, despite being clearly stated in my initial application. A major issue was the lack of transparency regarding salary. I had stated my expected salary at the top of the advertised range upfront, but in a later round, this was misunderstood as 15-20% lower. The final offer was more than 30% below my expectation and even under the advertised range. When I asked what skills I lacked for a higher salary, I received an unclear answer (e.g., “partnership management,” which doesn’t align with a development role). I was also told that MUBI intentionally offers lower salaries, expecting employees to “grow into” higher pay over time, which was something not disclosed earlier in the process. No additional benefits were discussed to justify the lower offer. Several red flags stood out, including being asked about my current salary in an interview with the CTO, a questionable practice in many hiring processes. After I reiterated that even my adjusted expectation was still below my current salary, the discussion about increasing the offer was dropped entirely. I believe junior developers might find MUBI a good place to grow, given their approach to salary progression. However, for senior developers, the compensation is not competitive, and the process feels like a waste of time if you have clear salary expectations. I would not recommend MUBI for experienced engineers unless you are comfortable with a significantly lower salary than market rates.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear that you found the team friendly and the interviews relevant, but we regret that the process left you feeling frustrated and misled. Transparency around salary is something we take seriously, and we’re sorry that there was a misalignment in expectations. We understand how important it is for candidates to feel their time is valued, and we will be reviewing how we communicate compensation details earlier in the process to ensure greater clarity. Regarding your concern about salary discussions, our intention is always to assess fair and competitive compensation based on skills, experience, and the role’s scope. That said, we appreciate your feedback and will reflect on how we approach these conversations moving forward. We truly appreciate your interest in MUBI and the time you invested in the process. Wishing you all the best in your next role.
