I worked with a friendly recruiter (who has now left the company) who I thought had been looking out for me, and was pretty excited about the opportunity. However, after several successful interviews, and flying across the country to participate in a final round presentation, I was offered a job as an associate (2 levels lower than I had been interviewing for, about 5 years below my expertise, and 10k less than my previous position, pre-graduate degree) because someone who had never interviewed me thought that would be a better fit. Two of my interviewers and the recruiter separately reached out to apologize and to say that they thought this was a mistake, but no one was able to remedy it. Given that I had several offers on the table, this was an easy one to cut out. It was sad because I thought some of the people were great, but the experience made me feel as though the company was not being managed well.
