It was a fairly straightforward process, as far as initial interviews go. I submitted my application, and the recruiter emailed me to set up an HR screening with an additional colleague.
The interview went extremely well, and I appreciated the interviewers' energy and conversation. It seemed like my experience aligned perfectly with their needs, too. However, things went sideways when I was asked about my salary expectations. My response was standard for the SLC/PC area, but after that, the tone completely changed. I was met with an icy response and the interviewer asked if he could give me advice, seemed clearly bothered, and told me that "people don't join this industry for the money."
I understand that sometimes candidates are outside of a company's budget, but this was by far the most uncomfortable interaction I've had around salary. Needless to say, the process did not move forward after that conversation.
