      Software Engineer Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SoftWear Automation (Atlanta, GA) in Jan 2019

      Interview

Began with a recruiter phone screen, which doesn't amount to much but to tee up next steps. Then 2 c++ assessments on codebunk, one 40 minutes and one 30 minutes. The first one was easy character manipulation (C only, really), and the 2nd one involved 2D vectors from STL, which had some C++14 notation I wasn't immediately familiar with. So I bombed on the 2nd one. (actually, I could do it in one hour no problem, but that was too late). Really, the process is a bit pretentious and heartless. The recruiter seemed like she couldn't care if I proceeded with the assessments or not ("if you want, you can take the 2nd assessment" - if I want ?). Seems like a sweatshop made for kids out of college.

I’m sorry this was a negative experience for you, that is certainly not our intent as we truly strive to have the process be as conversational as possible while still assessing for the skill set required. Unfortunately, the assessments are a necessary component for any software role, especially in something cutting-edge and high-tech. We are about the farthest thing possible from a sweatshop and definitely not a college kid start-up; we have an age range of 24-68 and are very proud of our diverse team. It appears we were not a good match and hope that you have found a place perfect for you.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at SoftWear Automation (Atlanta, GA) in May 2021

      Interview

Pretty balanced. Technical with lead engineer of your discipline. Followed by behavioral with director and CEO. The latter are pretty relaxed. There are getting to know you as a person. They are more interested in your fit and how you think.
