      Graduate Software Developer Interview

      Dec 10, 2014
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Softwire (London, England) in Nov 2014

      Interview

I applied online. Had a phone interview, it was fairly easy. Asked some usual questions about ladders and bracket matching. Next they schedule an office interview. The interview is rather simplistic but I'm very unhappy about the experience. First they take you into a very cold room in which the light periodically disappears every 5 minutes and have you do an IQ test at the end of which you have to write an essay. I was barely alive afterwards. Then they have you wait an hour while the results come in (no lunch, nothing). Afterwards you get a quick competency interview where they focus on why you want to work for the company and what are your expectations. They don't pay new hires more than 33k pounds. Afterwards you get several technical interviews. They ask you to write an algorithm for an alarm clock in a simple assembly language. Then they ask you to write an algorithm for an agent in a maze in a simple assembly language. These exercises weren't difficult but terribly annoying. Next one shows you a bunch of programs and asks what each of them does and asks how you could improve upon them. After every interview they have you wait for 10 minutes in the same freezing room with flaky lighting. Final step is to either write a game of life implementation, or a program that would calculate different pathways in a london tube map, standard graph stuff. I called it quits at this point and went home because I was very disappointed by the company.

I'm very sorry your experience of interviewing with Softwire wasn't a positive one. If I can just pick up on a few points raised above: - All our meeting/interview rooms have functioning air conditioning. If candidates are hot or cold they are welcome to ask the interviewer to adjust the temperature - All our meeting rooms come with motion sensitive light switches which are energy efficient. Your experience may have been due to a faulty sensor, but it's not something that typically happens. - There is no requirement for candidates to wait an hour whilst test results 'arrive' - they are emailed to our team instantaneously. We do however schedule a break of around 40 minutes during the day to allow candidates to have lunch. Candidates are welcome to relax in our chillout space or look around the offices / locality during this time (as I believe you did). - Our standard graduate starting salary in London is currently set at £33,000. We do however pay new hires more than that where their experience clearly merits it – and this can include those fresh out of university as well as, obviously, those with prior commercial experience - Passing our interview isn’t simply about getting through the tests to the ‘right answer’ as quickly as possible. It’s also about demonstrating a good, logical way of thinking about the problems, engaging with the interviewer positively and having a productive and interesting conversation. - I don’t think that many of our candidates would consider our tests ‘easy’. Of those that apply to us, only around one candidate in 25 will end up receiving an offer – and our primary (but not exclusive) criterion is their performance in the technical tests. Even those that we end up making an offer to invariably feel genuinely stretched by the challenge. You must be one of the very best and brightest! As I say, I’m sorry that your experience fell short of your (and our) expectations in this case. If you (or any other readers of this) would like to contact me to discuss further, please email recruit@softwire.com and mark as FAO Dan/Glassdoor.

Interview process was fine. The recruiters are pretty damn rude though. My rejection email included the line “test results from our applicants are normally very high”. Thanks for that punch to the stomach.

Hi - I'm really sorry that you found this email to be rude. I believe that it was this section that you objected to: "If you wish to see a detailed breakdown of your results, and how your scores compare with other candidates, please visit this page: [snip]. NOTE: The standard of our applicants is in general exceedingly high so please view any comparisons in that light." The intention of this phrase is to reassure candidates that the benchmark with which they are being compared is in fact a very high standard, and that an 'average' candidate for our developer roles is usually a very good candidate. Obviously this phrase didn't come across as reassuring in your case, for which I apologise. I'm going to move the offending sentence to the page where the test results are displayed, and add more context around it, in the hope of avoiding this problem in the future. Thanks very much for the feedback - it will help us improve.
