I applied for a paid position that they had posted online, and they contacted me to come in for an interview. The role's supervisor was there to interview me. However, once the interview started, the individual informed me that they did not have enough money to pay the posted salary and that they would like me to volunteer to do the role (for free) with the hopes of then being hired after a few months once I had proven myself and funds maybe had become available.
It was incredibly deceitful to not inform me of this before I took the time to drive over an hour on a work day to come in for an interview. Also, considering the experience I have, it was appalling that they would suggest I do a full-time job for free.
I stopped by the restroom before I left. When I later walked to the front door (there is a space where the wall dividing the entryway and staff office area does not connect to the ceiling), I heard at least two of the staff members (one was the individual who interviewed me) on the other side of the wall mocking the next interviewee for wearing a suit and tie to his interview. He was also within ear shot of their conversation and looked petrified... That level of rudeness alone made it extremely clear that it was not a place I would ever feel comfortable working.
