Long drawn out assignment with high expectations. They give you a dataset from a research paper and expect a full solution based that could go into production - no api key given! It's not hard but equally it is very time consuming for what they are looking after. In reality, they are just a bunch of prompt engineers with no actual fine tuning or sophistication when it comes to the heart of the solution.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tomoro AI (Melbourne) in Apr 2026
Interview
Its 2026 and the company still asks to do live coding with no coding assistant which i think doesn't reflect day to day work.
they can ask what they want but for me I feel they values people from Software engineering background for AI engineer roles more than some one has ML background. but its your choice! I just dont feel fit and feel waisted of time.
As the other candidate mentioned, they gave a research paper as a take-home assignment. The task itself wasn’t difficult, and they explicitly said it would only take a few hours. They also said you don’t need to implement everything — it’s fine to describe future features in the report.
I spent two full days on it and submitted. The feedback I got was basically: why didn’t you implement more of the “future direction” features and why not doing more tests using modern LLM. Using modern LLM like gpt 5 or gemini 3 will cost a lot of money for the dataset given.
Honestly, the feedback felt shallow and didn’t come across as coming from an experienced engineer. They’re supposed to be running a business consultancy, but the way this was evaluated felt more like academic research than real-world engineering. Will never ever do any take home assignment again.
