      Lab Manager Interview

      Mar 24, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Diego, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Truvian (San Diego, CA) in Feb 2021

      Interview

All one hopes for in an interview is the opportunity to fully investigate a possible fit of skills and experience to the job description, and cultural fit to the company. Sadly this was not the case for this interview, making it a significantly disappointing experience and possibly the worst ever phone interview. Contacted by HR, set-up call directly with Hiring Manager. 1. Hiring Manager several minutes late to 30 min call! Mentioned that preceding meeting had run late. 2. Ran through standard questions that could easily have been handled by an HR pre-screen. Most questions were simple answers that the HM was clearly trying to check-the-box. 3. Demonstrated limited understanding of the complexity of laboratory operations or the skillset needed to be successful in the Lab Manager role, or how the right candidate could significantly help organization or HM. E.g. Claims that Truvian is more than doubling laboratory staff by end of 2021, but has no clear idea on how to accommodate the growth. Seemed resistant to discuss any ideas I had, and never noticed that my resume detailed that twice I had managed laboratory/site build-outs in San Diego region. I had to bring this up. 4. Complained about not having the resume correctly printed and had CLEARLY not pre-read the resume! For example, "Have you set up an EHS program?" This is highlighted twice on the resume. 5. Rushed through interview, articulated that best candidate should have extensive experience but was not willing or able to delve deep into my background or experience. 6. Finally asked if I had any questions while also mentioning that he had to run to another meeting. 7. Completed the video call facing away from the camera whilst mumbling "We'll be in contact". Five (5) weeks later and no update (after I reached out twice)! Utterly disappointing when I know that I have the background/experience to help Truvian with their accelerated growth and when the interview format did not allow for a better/deeper investigation into my possible fit into the organization. Overall impression: Disorganized hiring process that does not allow interview candidates to fully present their skills and background. HM was not convincing in portraying confidence in communication, technical or leadership skills. Advice to management: Set up a robust interviewing program that mitigates against this kind of quick, hap-hazard, rushed and superficial interview screening.
