      Sr. Data Quality Analyst Interview

      Dec 13, 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Remote
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Ultranauts (Remote) in Dec 2022

      Interview

The interview approach and style was one of the most engaging, interactive, and supportive that I've experienced to date. It consisted of 3 stages: an initial interview with a senior recruiter, a skills challenge, and a final interview with a Senior Analyst and the Director of Data Quality Engineering. I was asked questions related to my experience, my approach to the core functions of the role, and behavioral questions associated with workflow and interaction with coworkers. The questions from the original interview were broad enough to be challenging, but specific enough to elicit genuine reflection. Asking for clarification and repeating the question was encouraged. I found the entire interview quickly became more of a naturally flowing conversation rather than a series of right/wrong answers. I left feeling like the recruiter, Arwyn, was an approachable and genuine person, and that she sincerely wanted to support me throughout the process. The next stage was a Data Quality Skills Challenge with a small dataset and a series of questions. I was invited to select a time window that allowed 5 hours for completion from the agreed upon time of receiving it in my inbox. Doing this exercise took me nearly the entire 5 hour allotment to complete, including formatting that I chose to include in the end product. It was a challenging set of questions that tested my ability to conceptualize the data quality process without formally performing the assessment and report. The questions directed me to frame tasks that I would perform on a daily basis without much thought (exploratory data analysis, testing, reporting, etc) and explain the intention of each task on a theoretical and conceptual basis. What I would usually think through in algorithms or in programming languages, I was tasked with describing in thought, action, and outcomes. I think it was a good measure of assessing not just technical skill, but in appraising my ability to communicate my approach across many aspects of the role and how my personal style supported the identified goals of a project. The final interview was with current data practitioners, one in the role I was interviewing for, and the other being the Director of the overarching Data Quality Engineering department. There was time offered for me to reflect on the previous stages of the process at the beginning. I was prepared to showcase my technical abilities in this interview, but found that it was centered more around my work approach, communication style, and practical approach to the core responsibilities of the role. The challenge to frame what is usually technical mathematics, analytics, and programming-based tasks in a conceptual, step-by-step process also featured highly in the set of questions. The interview ended with an opportunity to reflect on the recruitment process as a whole, and then ask additional questions.
