First, I was asked for a work sample from a time when I conducted some financial modeling, even though the role was entirely communications-based, with no technical aspects. Regardless, I provided one.
Then, I was moved on to the interview phase. It was a brief one, ~30 minutes long and virtual. The role's manager conducted the interview with his assistant and another intern on the call. The assistant turned off her video and took notes once the interview began.
The interviewer/manager arrived ten minutes late and clearly signaled they did not want to be there. He kept rubbing his forehead, looked tired, asked questions hurriedly, and was consistently sighing and looking offscreen. He was clearly unsatisfied with my answers throughout the interview and left the call for his intern and assistant to wrap it up.
Beyond the impersonal and impolite exchange, what I disliked the most about the interview was that he only asked me questions about the first two experiences on my resume. He drilled down on these even though they were my first two internships, both more than eight years ago, and were only adjacent to the work of UNCDF. This was also even though I have much more relevant experience, including within the UN, recently.
Of course, it's on my resume, so I'm ready to discuss them, but he drilled into these for some reason by asking me about two projects I liked and disliked about those roles. They were my first internships, so these roles were extremely limited in scope. I didn't have four or more projects to discuss. Regardless, for the first question, I answered as best I could, explained this fact, and highlighted my more substantive and recent experience, which I'd be happy to talk about. Nonetheless, he asked the same question about my second-to-oldest experience/internship on my resume.
The interview ended with me getting to talk to the intern 1:1. After my generic rejection email weeks later, the team was unresponsive to my emails, seeking feedback on what to improve.
