      Marketing Assistant Interview

      Feb 17, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Leeds, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Utopia Creations (Leeds, England) in Jan 2017

      Interview

You will go there thinking that the role is for Marketing Assistant but actually it is for advertising and selling products with a stand in a supermarket or shopping centre. Actually they are quite honest about that but they pretend they are looking for something else and that there are lots of opportunities for progression but I did not waste my time to check it. A woman searched me in Linkedin and I contacted her to know more about the opportunity. She called me and offered a quick face-to-face interview of about 15 min. She just went through my CV, and why I want to work in sales. Then she told me she will call me during the evening if I was successful. She told me she had to interview 40 people that day.... During the evening I got the call and after reading few reviews I already knew I did not want to go but I gave it a chance. Morning after I went, and I saw a girl who was waiting like me the day after (there I realised there were not 40 people...) and other young and pretty girls..... so I already knew it was gonna be a *****. They introduced us to the team and every person had a "coach". They brought us to the train station (they paid the return ticket). We caught a train while talking.. just questions about my background, how I am, why I wanna get the job, etc. The girl was really friendly so it was a nice trip. We end up in a supermarket advertising. I was not push to do anything at all, just looking what they actually do. After 20 min there doing nothing I decided to leave of course because that was meaningless. I told the girl and she felt quite offence "you are never going to get a position in management if you don't go through this first" these were her words. Pretty insulting for someone who spend 10.000 pounds in a UK master ;) but anways I left. That's all. If you believe that's for you, do it. If you have an undergraduate or a master's..... do not waste your time...You can get something better!

      Interview

Turned up to the office 40 minutes early, sat in a waiting room for the whole 40 minutes plus an extra 20 because they were "running late." It was an "informal" 1-2-1 interview that consisted of a general chat about what I was looking for and what they were looking for in candidates they explained that per 1 manager there would be 30 Marketing Assistants all doing field marketing DESPITE being advertised worded like a desk job. Told me to come dressed as casual as it wouldnt take too long at all (the phone call said it was a formal interview as well as the email did)

      Interview

This was a while ago now but from time to time I find myself thinking back to just how 'off' this whole process seemed to me. My application and the subsequent selection process for this role took place over a couple of days. The role description was very vaguely-defined on totaljobs but whatever, I was a grad looking for a job and wasn't too picky. I applied and a day or so later got a call from their Recruitment Manager, who seemed friendly enough, but the way they spoke made out like the role was more sales than marketing. I was invited to interview in person and so went into the office the next day. Once I reached the office, there were around 15 other people around my age sat in the waiting area, all filling out the same questionnaire I had been given. Some other people on here have mentioned lengthy waits for interview, but mine came around hilariously fast. My interview was scheduled for 5pm. I arrived at around 4.50pm. I went into my 'interview' and, after what I can only describe as being verbally sandblasted by the interviewer, found myself leaving the building at bang on 5. But the interview itself: Once seated in his office, the interviewer proceeded to regale me with the entire 10+ year history of the company, namedropping large brands too quickly for me to be able to actually process what he was saying and talking about the possibility of working abroad. At the start of the application process I thought I was applying to work in marketing. Then it was sales. Then in the 'interview' he was going on about being a Project Manager in Miami. The whole thing seemed seedy, confused and completely fake. I left the interview at the time it was actually scheduled to start, having been asked no meaningful questions about my experience or qualifications and being none-the-wiser about what the actual role would be. When I got home an hour or so later, I had a call from the manager telling me I'd "gotten through" to the next round and that it was "really competitive", despite my having had virtually no involvement in any of the interview. He then asked me if I could "come on site" on Friday. I couldn't. Saturday? No, sorry. Monday? No.
