      Software Engineer Interview

      Apr 9, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Validity (Boston, MA) in Apr 2020

      Interview

Phone screen with a recruiter, separate call with the hiring manager, take home assignment (finding the duplicates in a csv), video interview with the hiring manager and four team members. Assignment was a standard take home (they estimate 2-4 hours to complete) and during the video interview I was asked by two team members how I could make my work better which implies that it was 1) not great 2) they want someone to make free recommendations on the fly. No positive or constructive feedback was offered. I was also asked some undergrad level questions which didn't seem to have much to do with the role (they have standard libraries for that stuff now..) but more to do with flexing on the candidate. The entire review of the assignment and other "technical" questions felt more like an interrogation than a conversation. After the "technical" portion of the interview, I spoke to two newer members of the team who are... new to the company. As a result, I couldn't really get a true sense of the company history, business impact of the team's work, products and all the other things that differentiate a place where you go to a job from somewhere you can build a career. Video interview lasted 2.5 hours and there were no breaks at all (if you have to pee I guess you have to hold it). 48 hours later I was sent a canned HR rejection which could be considered pretty impersonal after I spent 8+ hours of my time working on the assignment, phone calls, etc. Based on my interview experience coupled with the recent bad Glassdoor reviews, I would not recommend applying/interviewing here unless you need the practice. In my initial call with the recruiter it sounded like the position was vacant because the last person was dismissed; however, this was never explicitly said which suggests present communication/transparency issues within the team and perhaps, within the company, at large.

We're disappointed to hear that you didn’t have a positive experience interviewing with us for an Engineering position. Our team spends an similar amount of time as our candidates do on the interview and exercise components, and we strive to ensure that time is well-spent and positive on both sides. The take home exercise demonstrates how candidates work through problems and the cleanliness of their code. We understand that this may be time consuming, but we value the insights this activity provides into how people work in addition to insights from traditional, sit-down interviews. With regard to the interview length of 2.5 hours, our Talent Acquisition team has received this feedback and will ensure that one or more breaks is included in future interviews. Thanks for taking time to share your feedback with us, and it will be used to make improvements in our process.

Phone Interview with HR; Technical Take-Home; Phone Interview with Hiring Manager; OnSite I didn't get past the phone interview with HR. Note to HR: if you're going to grill a candidate on what their salary expectations are, know more about the position first. After a bunch of questions where the recruiter had no idea the answer to, the recruiter asked me what other questions I had that he *could* answer, and all I can think about is "well, I don't know, what CAN you answer?" To this day I still don't know if this was for a junior or senior role.

I applied through college or university. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Validity (Boston, MA) in Jan 2019

      Interview

Prior to the interview, I had to work on a take-home exercise that was given to me by the company. After submitting my work, they asked me to come into the office to meet the team and have a formal interview. While there, I met multiple team members who work on the different teams and talked with them about my prior experience, myself, and my solution to the take-home exercise.
