      Senior Software Developer Interview

      Nov 4, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Mississauga, ON
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at WinMagic (Mississauga, ON) in Oct 2016

      Interview

HR searched from LinkedIn and reached me for a software developer opportunity. He then sent me the link for online test. I took the online test in the evening. There were 2 coding questions in C# and time limitation was 1 hour. The difficulty was intermediate but good enough to test programming capability. The online test was well designed. It gave example input and expected result. This helped understanding the questions. It also has online unit test to verify code. That's very helpful. I made a mistake for an edge case in the first question and the unit test caught it. Then I debugged my code and fixed it. Thanks to the unit tests. I spent about 45 minutes to finish the online test. Next day early morning, HR reached me for second phase - on site face to face interview. He told me they were very happy with my online test. They worked really hard on hiring. They were flexible on the interview time. I preferred late afternoon to minimize impact on my work. First the development manager interviewed me. He asked me to talk about my work experience and technical strengthens. He then gave me some real case scenarios and asked me for resolutions. He encouraged me to think loudly, i.e., speak out when I was thinking, so that he could know how I think and approach the issues and resolutions. He gave me positive feedbacks when I did well. I also asked for hints when I was stuck. He helped too. He also asked behavioral questions to see how I handle tough situations. Then the team leader interviewed me. He asked me to write code in paper for an algorithm question. I guess he was trying to verify if it was really myself that did the online test. For other questions, he asked me to talk about ideas. Most of questions i did well. One question I was stuck. He gave me some hints and I got it immediately. The last question I did not find good answer but we ran out of time. On the was home, I got the answer. The whole interview wen very well. I did not realize it had been about 2 hours already. They asked smart questions and I like those questions. I had different experience from other companies where interviewers asked too basic questions like difference between accessibility modifiers public / protected / private / internal or sealed classed. Those questions are too trivial for senior candidates. But at WinMagic, they did not ask those too simple questions as well. When I was stuck, they were also nice to hint and I then could move forward. I really appreciate that. I feel they must me very easy to work with. Then HR called me and gave positive feedbacks. He told me they liked me and invite me to join. My salary expectation was well above they range. Actually my expectation was at the top for the role in the industry. HR promised me he would help me and try to satisfy me. Several days later, he called me and told me they could offer me the rate I asked for. But unfortunately the same day I had got an offer with the same rate but better title. I had accepted the offer. The HR gentleman stayed cool. He congratulated me and understood me. He asked me to contact them when I seek another job in future. I was very happy with the HR, development manager and team leader during the interview process. They were very nice, positive, encouraging. I will recommend WinMagic to friends for sure. Actually I did recommend it to a friend already.
