The interview process was quite a negative experience.
The first interview had some strange questions. For example I was asked what the smallest unit of a design system is in Figma. I answered 'element', as that's the smallest unit in an atomic design system. The interviewer, who didn't have a design background had 'local variable' as the answer. Having spoken to other designers in my community about this question, 'local variable' just seems like an odd answer. I was also given a random logic quiz about cutting a cake. Even though I got this question right, my feedback would be to remove this question as it doesn't feel relevant to the role.
Next was the technical interview where I was given a task to design a flow for Zelt using their design system. I didn't feel this was a good task for the below reasons:
1. The task had lengthy requirements and constraints which limits the creativity of the applicant. The whole point of technical tasks is so you can see how a participant thinks, and this task just didn't allow for that.
2. Asking applicants to design something for the company itself can be a red flag, as there are concerns around designers completing free work for the interview.
After completing the task, I was ghosted by Zelt.
If you're applying for a role at this company, proceed with caution. I would not apply for a role with them again.
