I applied online for a technical position that allowed remote work, and was immediately sent an email that contained a short mathematics/programming quiz to test basic programming skills. After passing that, I was given a skills test to evaluate my system administration skills. The test was to configure and fix a broken virtual machine in Amazon EC2. For example, Apache was broken, DNS resolution wasn't working correctly, and IPTables needed to be locked down.
