      Interview

The interview itself was alright. Talked to the CTO and he seemed to know his stuff. The entire time I noticed how the main emphasis was always on the projects the company did and how much their clients love them, but never the work environment itself. Found out from Glassdoor afterwards that they're apparently a terrible company to work for so I never did the take-home programming test. I ended up receiving a rejection letter 8 months later lol.

      tbk Creative response

Dear Applicant: Thank you for leaving this response. The feedback of ensuring that management is discussing the company's culture in addition to talking about the company's commitment to building leading and effective digital solutions is good feedback. Company culture at tbk is something that’s important to all of us and the company puts a lot of resources into fostering it. For instance: Each quarter, the company gets together for a half paid day social event (e.g., recreational event, BBQ, etc.); monthly, the company gets together to toast and acknowledge each other for producing excellent creative and digital solutions for clients; last summer all employees received every other Friday off (on top of their regular paid vacation days); annually the company pays for all staff and their plus ones to experience a fun weekend at Blue Mountain Resort; and more. In terms of the comment about receiving a "rejection letter": As of this year, tbk has implemented a regular program where we provide follow-up letters to people whose applications weren't successful for positions at tbk. At no point have we ever labelled them as "rejection letter(s)", but instead are referenced as Letters of Acknowledgment. These letters come from a good place and I hope you can see them as such. We value everyone who takes their time to apply at tbk. You're important to us. And remember that most companies don't provide any letters at all. In terms of the letter taking "8 months", of course, it's more ideal if your letter could have come faster than it did. This I understand. I want to give you background and create some context that you may not be aware of: Since March of this year, tbk has received over 2,400 job applications and its employee base has grown over 50% in size (i.e., growing from 27 to over 40 staff members). From an operational perspective you can probably imagine growing a company over 50% and responding to such a high volume of applicants all within 6 months is no easy feat. What we decided to do was hire for the positions to meet operational needs (tbk has maintained a client retention rate of approximately 94% over the last two years which is unheard of in this sector) and then prepare and send out all the letters in one batch in September. This is likely the letter you received. The Letter of Acknowledgement program is now operational and candidates whose applications are unsuccessful receive the letters the month after the position is filled. Given that the vast majority of companies don't provide any lettered response to candidates, I hope you can see how this gesture alone is an effort tbk makes to show that we care about you and everyone that applies at our company. This program isn't words but a demonstration of action. I hope this information creates better background for you on why things occurred the way they did. If ever another position opens up at tbk that you feel matches your skillset, know that your application is welcome and please don't hesitate to apply again in the future. I'm sure you're a great and caring person. I wish you continued success in your career. - Andrew Schiestel, President, tbk

      Interview

Meet with tech lead. Included a basic number of questions and a technical task afterwards. Wasn't too difficult. They had a dog in the office as well which was super cute. More offices need dogs.
