Our Emergency & Critical Care Services (ECCS) Emergency, Critical Care Unit, and Intermediate Care Unit will be moving into a new 60,000 sq ft state-of-the art expansion of the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital late summer 2026. This new space will be equipped with open floor plans, dedicated nursing workstations, state-of-the-art monitoring and support care equipment, and comfort focused patient & client care areas. Salary Range
- RVT I: $41,600 - $45,760 ($20-$22/hr)
- RVT II: $47,840 - $52,000 ($23-$25/hr)
- RVT III: $54,080 - $58,240 ($26-$28/hr)
Shift Differentials: We offer differential (7.5%-20% of your hourly rate) compensation based on the hours you work which could be an additional $4,500-9,000/per year in addition to your salary.

1) Critical Care Unit: As a member of the CCU team, you would be directly responsible for performing patient care for critical hospitalized patients in this unit. RVTs assess patient status, facilitate medical treatments, and partner with veterinarians on the care and oversight of patients. We have a diverse patient caseload that can range from chronic disease management to more extensive ventilator and open-heart surgeries. Our CCU is staffed with a veterinarian 24-hours a day.
2) Emergency & Urgent Care: In this role you would triage and stabilize incoming emergency cases and assess client goals for optimal care. Facilitate medical treatments, diagnostic orders, and advanced procedures. Partner with veterinary students and provide opportunities for them to participate in the care of a patient. Partner with veterinarians on the care and oversight of patients. Collaborate with patient care units (Critical Care Unit or Intermediate Care Unit) to admit patients requiring hospitalization. We have a diverse patient load and receive everything from patients that have mild GI signs and lacerations to patients that need extensive stabilization with conditions such as respiratory distress, septic shock and polytrauma patients.
3) Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU): As a member of the IMCU team, you would be directly responsible for performing patient care for stable hospitalized patients in this unit. RVTs assess patient status, facilitate medical treatments, and partner with veterinarians on the care and oversight of patients. We have a diverse patient caseload that can range from post-operative recovery, orthopedics, and chronic disease management.
What does the ECCS Team at the VTH look like?
- Client Care Team: We have 24-hour reception to handle administrative processes: client check-ins, calls, and payments. This allows our medical teams to focus on patient and client care.
- DVM Team: 6 ACVECC DVMs, 6 ECC Resident DVMs, 2 ER DVMs, and 12 rotating small animal interns, providing support to patients, clients, and team members 24/7.
- Technician & Support Team: RVTs/ PVTs / VAs
- Imaging & Diagnostics: 24-hour support for imaging and laboratory diagnostics.

Position Summary
Veterinary Technicians in Emergency and Critical Care provide advanced technical clinical care to small animal and exotic patients in urgent, critical, and intermediate care settings within a teaching hospital. This role supports emergency procedures, anesthesia, patient monitoring, and life-saving interventions while contributing to clinical instruction for veterinary students, interns, and residents, ensuring high-quality patient care and accurate medical record management in a 24/7 environment. Positions are recruited at the Veterinary Technician I, II, and III levels, with increasing responsibility, experience, and clinical complexity expected at each level. Work is performed across rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the continuous care needs of the service.

Essential Job Duties
- Perform rapid triage and initiate life-saving interventions for emergent and critical patients, including CPR, oxygen therapy, and placement of IV/IO access to support immediate treatment.
- Provide continuous critical care by monitoring advanced parameters (ECG, blood pressure, capnography, ventilators, infusion pumps), recognizing subtle changes in patient status, and intervening promptly.
- Administer and manage anesthesia and procedural sedation for emergency surgeries and diagnostic procedures, including induction, airway management, anesthetic monitoring, and complex recoveries.
- Implement isolation and biosecurity protocols by managing PPE use, barrier nursing techniques, infectious disease workflows, and decontamination procedures to protect patients, staff, and the facility.
- Execute complex treatments and therapies such as blood and plasma transfusions, CRI medication calculations, central line care, advanced wound management, and enteral/parenteral nutrition support.
- Coordinate caseload and shift handoffs by prioritizing patient care needs, communicating critical updates to clinicians and incoming staff, and ensuring accurate, real-time medical record documentation.
- Instruct and support veterinary students and trainees in emergency and critical care technical skills, clinical reasoning, and safe patient handling within high-acuity and isolation settings.
- Perform other related duties including controlled substance management, crash cart and equipment readiness, stocking and inventory for high-use areas, participation in code reviews and quality improvement, and support of client communication during critical cases.

Supervision
Registered Veterinary Technician I and II positions do not have formal supervisory responsibilities. Veterinary Technician III positions may serve in a team lead capacity, providing guidance, workflow coordination, and training support to technicians and students, but do not carry formal hire, discipline, or performance evaluation authority.
