Description Mount Holyoke College was the first of the Seven Sisters -- the female equivalent of the predominantly male Ivy League. The nation's oldest continuing institution of higher learning for women, Mount Holyoke offers nearly 50 departmental and interdisciplinary majors to about 2,000 female students. Mount Holyoke is part of the Five College Consortium, which also includes Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and the University of Massachusetts. (Mount Holyoke students can take classes at any of these schools.) Notable alumnae include poet Emily Dickinson and Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein. Mount Holyoke was founded in 1837 by chemist and educator Mary Lyon.
