Santa Barbara's pristine beaches and Venoco's oil and gas exploration and production activities make for a volatile mix. Although Venoco has traditionally operated in the environmentally sensitive Santa Barbara Channel, it has been expanding its geographic reach and diversifying its operations. It owns interests in more than 650 drilling locations, primarily in California's Sacramento Basin and Monterey shale formation. It even has a drilling location in Beverly Hills. In 2010 Venoco reported estimated proved reserves of 85.1 million barrels of oil equivalent (of which 93% was oil). That year the company produced about 6,660 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
