Description Gallaudet University (GU) gives deaf and hard-of-hearing students the chance to be in the majority. Designed to accommodate hearing-impaired students, GU offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 40 majors to some 2,000 students annually. The bilingual university uses both American Sign Language (ASL) and English; GU admits a small number of hearing, ASL-proficient students to each incoming freshman class. Through Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, GU provides training and support for teachers and parents of hearing impaired children; it operates demonstration schools on its campus. GU was founded in 1864 and was named for Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a pioneer in education for the deaf.
