Patel succeeds Susan M. Jacques, GIA’s President and CEO since 2014, who will continue at GIA as a strategic advisor until her retirement at the end of 2025. “It is the honor of a lifetime to lead an institution as trusted and iconic as GIA,” said Pritesh Patel. “Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most dedicated and talented individuals in the industry—people who live our mission every day. The “King of Kashmir” aquamarine crystal cluster is one of the most significant gem mineral specimens discovered in recent history. Measuring 45 cm tall, 80 cm wide and reportedly 180kg, it was unearthed in 2019 from a pegmatite dike in the remote Nyet Bruk region of northern Pakistan. Pegmatites are geological marvels—coarse-grained igneous rocks formed during the final stages of magma cooling. Their complex chemistry can create pockets rich in gems like tourmaline, spodumene, topaz and beryl. Because of this, pegmatites are treasure troves for gem hunters and mineralogists alike. Studying pegmatites helps scientists understand processes inside the Earth’s crust.
