Centre College's name reflects its location in the geographic center of Kentucky (near Lexington) as well as its founders' preponderance for British spellings. The private liberal arts school enrolls some 1,200 students majoring in about 30 academic areas. Some 85% of students participate in study-abroad opportunities, which cost little more than regular tuition. Centre boasts a fraternity that carries an oil portrait of alum former Supreme Court Chief Justice Fred Vinson (Dead Fred) to all home football games. Living alums seem to like the place too: The school is ranked #1 in the nation in terms of percentage of alumni making annual contributions. Centre College was founded in 1819 by Presbyterian leaders.
