Essent plays an essential part in meeting energy needs in the Netherlands. The company supplies electricity, gas, and heat to 2.7 million private and business customers, from power generation to the flip of the light switch. Essent's core market is the Netherlands, although it is also active in Germany and Belgium. In addition to electricity products, Essent also provides waste management services through Essent Waste Management. A handful of Dutch provinces and municipalities own the company. In 2007 the company agreed to merge with fellow Dutch utility giant Nuon, but the deal fell through. In 2009 Essent was acquired by top German energy player, RWE for $10.7 billion.
