Description The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is the Department of Defense's front man in the global war on terrorism. The USSOCOM's primary mission is to plan, direct, and execute the war as the lead combatant command. Secondarily, it trains and equips Special Operations Forces which include some 50,000 troops with training specializations in unconventional warfare and special operations such as Army Rangers (the military's premiere light infantry direct action force), Navy SEALs, Green Berets, pararescue units, scouts, snipers, special boat teams, and search and rescue teams. USSOCOM was created by Congress in 1986 to address emerging terrorist threats.
