One of the oldest franchises in the National Basketball Association, the team was first organized by Les Harrison in New York as the Rochester Royals in 1945 and earned its only championship title in 1951. Afterward, the club turned vagabond and was known variously as the Cincinnati Royals, the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, and the Kansas City Kings until Gregg Lukenbill bought the team and moved it to Sacramento, California, in 1985. Brothers Joe and Gavin Maloof purchased the franchise in 1998 through their Maloof Sports and Entertainment.
