The RoughRiders name was presented by the American press on the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Spanish–American War. The franchise was based in Shreveport, Louisiana, but moved to Texas in 2003 by the purchase of Mandalay Entertainment and the Southwest Sports Group.
