Mission "Our mission is to inspire and enable everyone to garden"
Description W. Atlee Burpee Company (Burpee) is a privately held branded seed and plant producer and merchant headquartered in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Burpee has a market leading brand among home gardeners, supported by the iconic annual Burpee catalog. Burpee also has strong and broad distribution across direct-to-consumer and retail channels, including leading Home Improvement Stores and Mass Marketers. The company was established in 1876 by W. Atlee Burpee whose mission continues today—to provide high-quality products through innovation and maintaining high standards. As America's oldest and most trusted supplier of vegetable and flower seeds and plants, Burpee has provided home gardeners with the very best open-pollinated and hybrid varieties for 147 years. The company takes great care in supplying seeds that are well suited for both conventional and organic gardens across the US, providing products that are not genetically modified (non-GMO), with quality and integrity foremost in mind.
Generations of customers have trusted Burpee to deliver the highest quality products and service. Gardeners rely on Burpee for reliable plant information and how-to tips that make gardening easier and more successful. Burpee guarantees every product that they sell, and the business is deeply committed to the satisfaction and success of all gardeners. Since the company’s founding in 1876, Burpee has introduced countless new vegetable, flower, herb and fruit varieties – including the original ‘Iceberg’ lettuce (1894), the first white marigold (1976) and the biggest beefsteak tomato ever bred (2014). To this day, Burpee’s historic home at Fordhook Farm in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is a trial ground for up-and-coming, breakthrough varieties.
In 1991, George Ball acquired W. Atlee Burpee. As CEO and Chairman, George introduced hundreds of innovative, high-quality flower, fruit, and vegetable varieties, expanding the scope of the organization. George has since stepped back from his CEO responsibilities; however, he remains active in the company today as Executive Chairman. In 2019, Jamie Mattikow joined as President and CEO of the company. Jamie is a highly-revered brand marketer who has accelerated storied brands at organizations such as Ferrara Candy, Kraft and Mars. He looks to usher Burpee into a new era of relevance in a more competitive and digitally-focused landscape.
