    Approves of CEO

I worked at AC Transit (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is an ability to have a position of stability if you can negotiate the work rules and "forced" participation in labor unions.

    Cons

Very "union oriented" pro-labor working environment with multitudes of work rules. Political, elected Board of Directors interfere continuously with staff work & behavior. Highly volatile management structure with minimal support from upper management.

    Advice to Management

New General Manager has a lot going but is highly constricted with the elected Board. Advice is to continually emphasize to staff that contact with Board members is exclusively GM to Board and duties/direction come through chain of command.

I worked at AC Transit full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits used to be good. Not sure if they are now.

    Cons

There are some good people here, but for the most part this is an environment of backstabbing and people who will throw you under the bus if it helps their career. The Board of Directors don't care about the employees and morale suffers as a result. The unions keep bad employees around at the expense of the good ones.

I worked at AC Transit as a contractor

    Pros

Thorough people to work with. Very professional.

    Cons

If travel is a part of your job, limited free parking. Lot was always full.

    Pros

Some coworkers are friendly. You only work 8 hour days (unless you're a bus driver)

    Cons

No internal communications structure. Bus drivers don't get a work email so you can't communicate to them. Employees are a bit disenfranchised by the job and management.

I worked at AC Transit (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people, committed and hard working

    Cons

Staff overworked and hindered by process and protocols. Lack of clear communications across departments

    Advice to Management

Need to focus on what matters most. Set priorities and let go of other items. OR, higher more staff.

    Pros

The Interim General Counsel is wonderful. She is thoughtful, and encouraging. She really wants to make sure that things are done appropriately. She encourages her employees to push themselves to their limits. That is totally refreshing and not the norm.

    Cons

Know it all managers, the inability to self police -- not being able to admit when the knowledge isn't there, vindictivenss, people horde knowledge as though it is currency, which is very scary. No respect for knowledge of institutional history -- total lack of teamwork.

    Advice to Management

Act as a team. Times are hard and it is very important to move as one, not like you're trying to create your own little fiefdom.
