Avoid This Absolute Dumpster Fire of a Company

Pros

Work-life balance is much better than other agencies. I rarely have to stay late and coworkers generally respect each-others work hours. Unlimited PTO is a plus and there is a soft-close the week between Christmas and New Years. Most of the staff here are pleasant to work with and are generally nice people.

Cons

Where do I even start? I used to love working here and would rave about it to everyone, but things have gone downhill fast over the past year or so. After multiple messy mergers/acquisitions, leadership changes, and company re-orgs, Assembly is a hollow shell of what it once was. Make sure to do you research so you know what you would be getting yourself into. Stagwell is Assembly's holding company and is suffering big time financially - search the ticker symbol STGW to see for yourself. The rest of the market and other agency holding companies are doing well YoY, but Stagwell is down over 10%. The investors see the writing on the wall and so do us employees. Assembly leadership used to be transparent and respected by the staff, but that is sadly no longer the case. They flip-flop constantly on major decisions and are generally shady about going-ons at the company. Recently a chunk of the finance team was was let go without any notice to those that work with them, and rumors quickly started to swirl about layoffs. The North American CEO promised on a town hall they would send out an update of what happened, but we have not heard a word about this, even weeks later. They also say they appreciate us as employees, but this could not be further from the truth. Last year they withheld our pay increases for months after they were promised, since the company was/is struggling financially. Rather than be transparent about it, they let rumors fly and swept it under the rug. This is also the first company I worked for that gave its employees absolutely nothing for the holidays - not even a mug or a $5 gift card. If you work here, expect to be treated as a financial number to be cut rather than a person. I could keep going, but you get the point. There is also a huge lack of accountability at this company. No one is held responsible for what that they do/don't do, and it shows. Work is often done sloppily and with a lack of effort, simply because people have generally stopped caring. Management is more concerned about timesheets to figure out who to cut next rather than actually supporting the employees who put out great quality work (or actually providing consequences for those who grossly underdeliver). Please avoid Assembly if you have any work ethic whatsoever and want to be respected and valued by the higher-ups. They are also starting yet another re-org this year and have openly said multiple times that it is going to be messy, so yet another reason not to jump on this sinking ship.

Toxic and Demoralizing

Pros

There are a few decent humans remaining, but most are on their way out.

Cons

The positive reviews are fake, I can assure you of that. Assembly is the most toxic agency culture I’ve ever experienced. I’m not sure if it stems from the merger of MDC and Stagwell (and subsequently Media Assembly and ForwardPMX), but this agency is in a years-long identity crisis, and the lack of consistent, solid leadership has created a manic and unstable environment. They’re trying to punch above their weight in the industry and it seems like everyone is in some sort of power struggle, eager to make their mark. Decisions are made hastily, with seemingly no foresight or future planning. Then when the resulting operational failures start to pile up, the finger pointing and blaming begins. If you’re an egomaniac who is comfortable scorching the earth on your way to the top, OR if you’re a lemming who never questions the status quo and is happy to simply carry out the biddings of your overlord, then you’ll do fine here. If you like to treat others with respect (and expect the same in return) and have any desire to incite positive change within an organization, look elsewhere. Bonus insights on leadership: Stagwell's CEO and founder is a MAGA deep-state conspiracy theorist (check out his Wikipedia)

Pros

Nothing - when the client speaks ill of the agency directly to you as soon as you start - that's a major red flag

Cons

-The Managing Director, Valerie Davis, doesn't know what she is doing - and will be condescending to the whole company even during this whole COVID-19 pandemic - she spoke as if mental health/work-life balance was not a thing employees themselves and the company should care about and what we should care about is PROFIT AND MONEY for the company - she literally called a question regarding Summer Fridays disingenuous for even being asked and that we need to just work longer hours - ZERO EQ for someone who should be leading the company -Actual job doesn't match what you interview for -Lack of transparency -Company is trying to be an integrated digital agency, but only can execute Paid Search decently. The integrated account I was on, was and is still an absolute mess with no process, not enough digital knowledge being led by extremely weak, blind leadership with no actual media background -No training -Will hire a new employee for a particular position without telling the employee they are the only person within the company in that department - so be prepared to ask for additional resources and be met with "huh, what? you need more people to do a job that in other agencies require a full team, yeah.. we don't have the budget nor are we looking to give you a team to help you") -Company is full of "lifers" or folks who have spent their whole career there with no experience from the outside world so they cannot see how backward this agency is -Higher ups are not qualified for their titles/positions/pay - they have directors all the way up to SVPs who can't speak to what they actually are supposed to be leading -Favoritism and nepotism rampant -If you are experienced in the field and come in with ideas to help fix pain points, improve overall processes, create much needed processes, call out things that don't make sense, call our things that are being done incorrectly, etc BEWARE because you will get a lot of push back, be seen as a problem child, and if you want to make any change you're alone because no one will actually help you - managers will "listen" to you, but won't take any proactive measures to solve anything -High turnover with new, talented folks, while the weak stay because they don't know any better -HR department is non-existent and do not know what they are doing. -HR tried gaslighting me regarding pay - Managing Director and CEO said an effective date during a Company Wide meeting and HR tried gaslighting me on the date I heard saying they didn’t say what they said and that I was imagining things. Then they took it all back and apologized. -Can’t be a good employee here because you’ll be taken advantaged of. Their version of a “good employee” is one that aligns with their horrible morals.
