I worked at Boston Area Rape Crisis Center as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Boston Area Rape Crisis Center gives training and ongoing supervision to their counselors. Those trainings are supportive to the counselors as well as victims.

    Cons

It is the only non-profit organization which gets the higher volume of hotline calls from the Boston and surrounding areas. Those calls can be sometimes challenging for hotline counselors.

    Pros

    - You will work with an extremely dedicated and talented group of volunteers
    - The BARCC staff is wonderful - they are some of the most positive individuals I know, and they manage to keep themselves at a good level of good mood and hard work in the face of trauma and other related challenges of the work
    - This is an extremely well-respected NGO. If you are interested in becoming a well-rounded nonprofit professional, BARCC can definitely provide you with experiences that not many nonprofits can (for example, the 40 hour training on sexual assault and being a first responder).

    Cons

    - talking, and thinking, and researching about rape and sexual assault for days on end can be really stressful and emotionally taxing. pay attention to your own feelings at the time of the internship and do what you can to take care of yourself first. It definitely took me a while in the internship to get used to this part of the nature of the work, but it's absolutely worth it if it's something you are passionate about

    Pros

A great mission with some really committed people.

    Cons

Middle management could use some development on "how to manage" there was a lot of micro management. I also learned very quickly that it is a Good ol' Girls club the pay and room for growth was stagnant if you were not apart of the club.

    Pros

Coworkers are very supportive of each other. Schedule was flexible. Incredible and innovative work to combat sexual violence.

    Cons

Pay was not great, as is the case for most non-profits.

I have been working at Boston Area Rape Crisis Center full-time

    Pros

-Great opportunities to gain experience in trauma-work, non-profit business systems, training facilitation and project management.
-You won't find more supportive, genuine, compassionate colleagues anywhere else.

    Cons

-No one is making millions and salary funding is often limited by grants.
-Most days there's more work to do than people to do it.

    Advice to Management

Consider establishing a structured professional development and advancement program so staff understand how much they can advance within the organization and in what ways. Increase number of staff and staff funding so BARCC can grow in the ways it needs to as a leader in rape crisis and prevention work.

I have been working at Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (More than a year)

    Pros

This is the organization that made me interested in pursuing mental health counseling and in empowerment based approaches to counseling. Lots of support provided for hotline volunteers such as bi-monthly peer supervision and a backup counselor whom you can speak with after every hotline call or at the end of your shift. Opportunities to provide buddy shifts after being involved with them for a while also available.

    Cons

My schedule tended to clash with the peer supervision meetings.
