    Pros

Working as a chef or cook , you will learn much about food service on a large scale. We served around 800 brunch and 800 dinner meals. Not like a restaurant. More like catering a large event every day. Benefits are nice. Job is pretty secure, if you like a contract assignment

    Cons

The kitchen tends to be a revolving door, where staff workers come and go often. As an educational institution, long breaks of a few weeks, without pay, are mandated by the school calendar, i.e., Winter Break & Spring Break.

I worked at Cal Dining part-time

    Pros

Cal Dining offers an easy to learn job for student workers especially if it is their first job.

    Cons

Some facilities do not treat their workers well nor do they have the best food safety practices.

I have been working at Cal Dining part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Working with other students who understand the struggle of working to pay for rent and rising living costs while in school
    -Free meal per shift

    Cons

    -No training
    -Heavily underpaid
    -No paid sick days
    -Only one meal per shift
-No formal procedure to file grievances
-Students quitting left and right, leaving huge gaps during shifts --> remaining students who can't quit have to work harder to compensate during busy hours

    Advice to Management

Listen to your student workers. The UC works because we do. We need a living wage. The work conditions are NOT safe. We also eat the food that is being prepared, and we know that the way food is being made do not follow health standards.

I worked at Cal Dining part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

creative job with lots of freedom to order decorations, bring in student groups, plan events etc. I was part of the marketing team as a work study job for UC Berkeley. It was super fun for the first semester and we had a great community of teamwork.

    Cons

The second semester, the school budget got cut and management changed for the marketing team. The new management ran things completely differently, and there wasn't very much creativity or team building within the workplace anymore. It became all about money and I didn't feel valued as an employee or person--I quit because of this change in the way things were run.

    Advice to Management

Encourage employees instead of telling them their weaknesses. Encourage creativity and try to minimize hierarchy so that more people feel they have a voice.
