I worked at Cal Dining part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

creative job with lots of freedom to order decorations, bring in student groups, plan events etc. I was part of the marketing team as a work study job for UC Berkeley. It was super fun for the first semester and we had a great community of teamwork.

    Cons

The second semester, the school budget got cut and management changed for the marketing team. The new management ran things completely differently, and there wasn't very much creativity or team building within the workplace anymore. It became all about money and I didn't feel valued as an employee or person--I quit because of this change in the way things were run.

    Advice to Management

Encourage employees instead of telling them their weaknesses. Encourage creativity and try to minimize hierarchy so that more people feel they have a voice.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

    - Flexible schedule. Very accommodating to shifting student timelines. Would allow some days off without any problem if an exam, extracurricular, internship work came up, or if you were just plain tired from a harsh week.
    - Meals with every shift! :-)
    - Get a 25 cent increase after every successful semester.

    Cons

    - Lines can be long and endless at times.
    - Coworker drama.
    - Some students don't show up without advanced notice which makes you work harder.

    Advice to Management

    - Overall very good. I would recommend.
    - Fair and welcoming.
    - Payroll is slow and clunky sometimes. Some kids didn't get paid for over a month!

I worked at Cal Dining part-time

    Pros

Loved event planning, being creative, being active. It was a fantastic job, with bad management.

    Cons

The management is awful, they do not direct you into what they expect of you giving the illusion of autonomy then in turn, telling you everything you did is incorrect. The management does not have experience in how to market or event plan and what you do is based on their standards, which is highly lacking.

I have been working at Cal Dining part-time

    Pros

You are mostly working with other students, so the environment is not too high-strung and there is opportunity to have fun. It is also very easy to trade shifts with other employees if something comes up.

    Cons

There is a certain degree of micromanagement but I expected that, as we are responsible for what's going into hundreds of students' bodies. It can get boring at times, especially with the cleaning duties, as it is repetitive and sometimes slow.

    Advice to Management

Be understanding of students who need to trade multiple shifts because college students often have more on their plates than just work, and as long as those shifts are being covered rather than abandoned there really shouldn't be a problem.
