I worked at CalRecycle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everything about this place was wonderful. I worked as a law clerk and loved every minute of it. I had real responsibilities and great opportunities to research the law and interact with seasoned attorneys. Everyone was intelligent, capable, welcoming and kind.

    Cons

Hmmm.. none? Okay maybe the pay, but I was in school at the time and most student positions are unpaid, so I was happy with receiving an hourly wage!

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. What a great place.

I have been working at CalRecycle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I like the agency's mission. Some of the Programs are managed by dedicated people but who also have a good work/personal life balance as well and allow that for their employees too. And since they can't reward good workers with raises or promotions without a huge ordeal, the smart managers let little stupid things go if the work is getting done reasonably well and quickly. The Information Technology Division provides excellent service - truly some of the best of any State Agency for which I have ever worked.

    Cons

Some of the managers micromanage way too much about non-essential things and have unrealistic expectations of humans and workload requirements. These are often the ones who are very ambitious to promote themselves and use pressure rather than positive incentives to inspire their employees to perform more. This often backfires as it drives good employees to make sometimes even a lateral move to get out from under the thumb.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that treating your direct report employees with respect and consideration can actually propel you in your career trajectory because they are more likely to stay longer in service to you, thus conserving costs of recruiting and training new staff, especially with as dynamic and undocumented the processes often are within the State.

    I worked at CalRecycle full-time

    Pros

Mostly laid back and relax atmosphere. Management and staff passionate about their jobs and the environment for the most part. Flexible work schedules and opportunities to interact with stakeholders and businesses.

    Cons

Compensation not merit based since it's the state and the union was ineffective union in my opinion.

    Advice to Management

Pay closer attention to individual employees. Reward those who perform and do the opposite with those who don't.

    Pros

    * Open-door policy all the way to the director
    * Most technologically advanced department in the State of CA
    * Friendly atmosphere

    Cons

    * Difficult to move upwards for some departments
    * Has many of the stereotypical state employee types
    * HR has been going through a rough patch and it shows. Almost a full restaff.

    Hold employees more accountable.

I have been working at CalRecycle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back environment. Frequent down time not very fast paced at all. Work is simple. Great work life balance and paid sick leave

    Cons

Frequent downtime makes the work day a drag. Also a lot of sneaky coworkers who go behind your back but that's any department and job. Not many cons other than those.

I have been working at CalRecycle full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you’re interested in learning new things, there are lots of opportunities to move around and up. Lots of bright staff. For the most part, supervisors & managers are supportive. Flexible schedules.

    Cons

It is government – unions, stereotypical state workers, and a few bad supervisors will always exist and cause strife.

    Advice to Management

This is a great department. We should promote that and recruit more talented staff to work here.
