Pros
As they are a constantly growing company, there are opportunities to learn, be involved in many areas in the company, and grow as an engineer.
Cons
With a computer science Bachelors, I was only getting paid $15/hour with no prospects for a raise or any benefits in the future. The company is run by a dad and son. Both were nice and welcoming at first. However, as I began working, the son began micromanaging how I spent every hour, when I came and left, etc. He made everyone use an hour tracking website that recorded our computer screens to ensure we were on task. This reduced my productivity because I would not take meaningful breaks simply to meet my hour requirement and thus was not functioning at full capacity and focus while working. This made me feel devalued and distrusted as an employee. This also felt like an invasion of privacy to record my screen on my personal laptop. It was an extremely oppressive environment to work in. Addtionally, the son was often unprofessional and rude. He called me names like "stupid" and "idiot" for making mistakes even as I was still learning. He was abrasive to other employees on the phone. His mood was volatile, and he would compliment or denounce at a moment's notice. The father actively condoned all of this behavior. Other employees also told me about the father's unwelcome advances into female workers' personal space. This made me feel extremely uncomfortable to work there. Other employees also told me that they often worked more than 40 hours per week but were not paid overtime. For one of the days I worked, I was not paid due to it being a holiday. When asked to be paid, the son simply said to take a day off instead of letting me complete my 40 hrs per week allotment. If this were my sole income and way of supporting a family, this would be extremely harmful to my weekly budget and unnecessary burden and unpredictability in my life, which should not be accepted at such an established company or any company for that matter. On my last day, I filed a report to the company's outsourced HR department. However, as the dad is the CEO and owner, no action was taken. Thus, any complaint against the dad or son simply falls on deaf ears and the perpetrators do not face any consequences and continue to abuse their often international employees, employees in their first jobs, and female employees. I hope future applicants and business partners consider their unprofessional and frankly illegal behavior before working with or for them.
