Pros

Getting to work in an environment that provides exposure to large international development agencies

Cons

AMSCO for many years had one enormous advantage over its competitors: a special dispensation that allowed it to place expats in African SMEs under a tax exemption. People used AMSCO not because it was a good HR agency, but because the people it placed did not have to pay any income tax. As a result, the company never had to invest in its own systems, and a culture of mediocrity and incompetence became the order of the day.

Pros

Opportunties to work across Africa, exposure to different industries

Cons

AMSCO was in a unique position of being an UNDP project implemented by the EU. It placed expats in African businesses and, because they were part of the UN, these expats paid no tax. It was really easy to get clients this way (tax free salary!), but this meant that AMSCO never invested in its own systems or building a business that was competitive in any other way. When the UNDP didn't renew, the business contracted in a serious way and it has never really recovered.
