Legislative aide - Legislative Aide Alaska State Legislature Employee Review

Pros

The salary is for a full year, but the vast majority of the work, depending on your boss, is from January to April, which are the sucky months in Alaska anyways. This job is like getting paid (a pretty good salary) to go to grad school--you learn everything about how the state operates.

Cons

You have to uproot your life and go to Juneau 4 months (or more) every year. Your boss can be a raging narcissistic dictator--and you have to take it. Discussions often take place on a fifth-grade level, and it's sometimes hard to tell whether the legislators really are that dumb or are just talking down to the people of Alaska, who they think really are that dumb.

Pros

Awesome staff; great boss; fun work environment; plenty of opportunity to learn, grow, and take initiative in every day activities.

Cons

Some days were slow when the Legislature was no in session. However, as soon as the Legislators were in town there was plenty to do.

Pros

Busy environment but great way to work with multiple constituents and professional contacts, depending on the office and the type of work.

Cons

Working over 40 hours and during weekends during session; work schedule changes depending on the session.
