Pros

The other teachers. They were incredibly supportive, encouraging and friendly and created a really excellent work atmosphere within the staffroom. They were always happy to help when they could with regards to lesson ideas/plans and the techniques which had worked for them in clarifying tricky aspects of language teaching. In all my life I've never been in a place with such a great banter atmosphere and I truly made many friends for life. They were always up for a good sing-song as well.

Cons

Very unfriendly and unsupportive director of studies. I'm effective management in general. Very unsupportive owner who doesn't care about his staff or the conditions of the teachers or students. Very few actual contracts and also ones which were very unclear about the time periods they covered. Complete lack of transparency in regards to pay scales and hierarchy within the teaching staff. Unwieldy and unnecessarily complicated CPD process required for moving up the pay scales, which really destroyed any motivation to stay long-term or develop as part of the company. This last point also created the feeling that the owner and director (at the time) were as happy with a continuous flow of short-term novice teachers as with keeping experienced long-term ones which in my opinion is a poor attitude for any school of any kind.

Pros

My colleagues who I worked closely with were great to work with, lovely and very hardworking. Nice building, central location. Overall friendly atmosphere in the workplace. Flexitime option too which is great.

Cons

I think the company takes complete advantage of great employees (both admin staff and teachers), works them to the max, and offers a very limited salary in return. There is zero job stability in this company, I was a permanent staff member who had to interview to keep my job! When I refused to interview (as they were merging 2 roles for basically the same amount of money, meaning double the work for little pay) they made me redundant. I don’t think a permanent staff member who has successfully passed their probation should be let go so easily. It is completely unfair. Teachers also have little job stability and the turnover of teachers is very high. It is also very difficult to get a pay rise in the company, my colleague was trying for many months.

Pros

The students were mostly pleasant and wanted to learn. The other teachers were good coworkers.

Cons

This school is run fully for profit, it can barely be called a school. Teachers are moved between levels too quickly to get to know their student's strengths/weaknesses. If a student asks to be moved up to a higher level class, they are often allowed to, even if they're not actually that level of English, leading to a huge imbalance in class ability. Management will sign you on a temporary contract with only 15hrs of teaching guaranteed. Your hours may be cut without warning, which often happened, so you'd make very little money in the week. Managers promoted underqualified people who had very little experience/education to managerial roles. People were let go with absolutely no warning. The low pay wasn't worth having to make your own lessons from scratch. High staff turnover, Management don't seem to care about the teachers at all.
