Pros

They had a lot of things that would seemingly make people want to work there - benefits, flexible time, fun activities, etc Amazing events that actually brought the community together

Cons

A bad management team that takes credit for their teams work but blames their team when things go bad. Toxic culture, people sneak behind others backs Cliques What is important seems to change every week, which makes nothing important

Hi there, Thank-you for your candid constructive comments. It’s unfortunate you felt this way about your time and experience at BC Tech. 2017 was a year of transition and lots of change. It appears you experienced a very different team and we’re truly sorry that the dynamic you experienced was less than ideal. Accountability is something that matters a lot to us, and is essential to a well functioning team. It’s why we have clear, quantifiable goals in place that we all work towards and talk about as a group. If we are not tracking to a specific goal, then we gather as a team and brainstorm ideas to close that gap vs. leaders taking credit for work or blaming team members when things are not on plan. If you're curious to see the changes we've made, I would encourage you to reach out to any team member or come by the Innovation Hub and observe the dynamic. We’ve worked hard to cultivate a culture of trust, openness, and honesty, and do our best to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible. In November 2017, we conducted a team engagement NPS survey (on a scale of 0-10, how likely are you to recommend BC Tech to a friend) where we rated a 44/50, which is a very strong score. We have heard and appreciate your feedback, and welcome you to come and work from the Innovation Hub to observe the team in action.

Pros

The mission. The snacks. The extra vacation time. The work from home option. The ability to network and have your finger on the pulse of the tech industry. However, all of this doesn't matter if you're not going to treat your employees with dignity and respect. You have zero autonomy over your work.

Cons

You will endure mental abuse at the hands of CEO and her EA/Chief of Staff. You are told exactly what to do and if you don't do it you will be harassed until you get it done. You are belittled if you share your ideas/opinions. The level of micromanaging in this organization is ridiculous. You do not have a designated desk at all. Relevant organizational information will be kept from you which does not allow you to succeed in your role and you will be blamed for it. There is a lack of clear direction from leadership which affects your work because they are always changing their minds and you constantly have to redo work and the deadlines do not move, meaning you will spend lots of evenings and weekends working. Your coworkers will throw you under the bus to save themselves but this is only because everyone is afraid of getting fired because every couple of months someone is fired for no reason. I highly recommend reaching out to former employees who will tell you the real truth about what is happening inside the Hub from Hell if you do not heed this warning.

We were disappointed to read your comments. We are committed to creating a work environment where people feel genuinely valued for their contribution and have the opportunity to learn and grow. We certainly do have a fast paced culture here, deal with complex challenges and have high standards. That’s largely because we are a non-profit funded by generous contributions from others who believe in our mission. We owe it to them to set the bar high and deliver on our commitments. We are not always perfect, but we’re working on it and we are incredibly proud of the team we have assembled.

Pros

• Highly ambitious organization. There is constant challenge, enough to keep you on your toes and the job exciting. • Highly energetic and tight knit teams who strongly believe in the org's vision. • You are in the forefront of current business conversations. Great opportunity to foster the tech community and network. • Work / life balance.

Cons

• ~66% turned over within a year and a half (10 people in a staff of about 15). Average term is one year or less. • As driven as you may be, support to be successful in your role is extremely limited. Sink or swim, cutthroat culture. One example: finding half an hour--even 10 mins--on a given week with sr. manager to have a focused discussion is a consistent challenge. It's rarely achieved. But expectations remain sky high. • Heavily (!) top down structure. • No performance review processes, 360s, regular feedback loops. Career development discussions are cunningly parried. They're strictly limited to one person within the org that's hand picked for grooming.
