Pros

Lots of work as long as the funding continues Goal-oriented can mean clear next steps Fairly good health benefits for a startup

Cons

Workload is extremely high Company is more like an investor-sponsored research group Poor adherence to structure and tracking systems for software team Reliance on cramming for deadlines Sidetracking causes wasted efforts Purposeful de-emphasis (in marketing materials) of non-C-level team member involvement illustrates the lack of inclusiveness and pride in the team Lack of inclusive culture with respect to alternative work experiences when hiring Bias toward hiring academics from the same institution (currently everyone from the team has a career past at the same University except for 1) Management is a boy's club (in fact, the entire team is male as of the time writing this) Poor communication by over communicating Other issues not mentioned here

Pros

- Lots of cool tech ideas to work on. - Due to its startup nature, the pace is rapid. - Your efforts will be recognized and valued. - The CTO is diligent and readily available for guidance. - You'll have the opportunity to collaborate with amicable engineers. - The CEO is highly motivating and encourages the team.

Cons

- Transparency regarding senior management decisions is limited. - Some managers engage in manipulative tactics for personal advancement. Exercise caution! - The team is small, resulting in a heavier workload. However, this can be advantageous if you're enthusiastic about taking ownership. - Diversity within the organization is significantly lacking. The organization is full of White males and it’s hard for others to fit in. - Office policies are applied with bias based on certain individuals. - While there haven't been any layoffs, there have been numerous instances of terminations based on political factors. - The absence of middle management results in everyone reports directly to the CTO. This arrangement can lead to slower decision-making processes and potentially result in being unfairly labeled as incompetent. This can prove to be not good for immediate graduates.
