Pros

Diverse company Stable job, not once did I ever feel like times were "too tough" Great benefits (403b, healthcare, dental, life insurance, FSA) Management is cognizant of work/life balance. Lots of opportunities to learn from smart folks

Cons

Repetitive Some days are very busy while others are not so much.

Pros

The mission of CENIC, providing research networks and internet access to schools libraries and cultural centers, is one that is awesome. Really the only reason that I stayed for so long. Really good medical and retirement benefits, however compensation is at least 10-15% below industry standard.

Cons

Financial issues, due to the nature of a non-profit there are always financial issues, however these have gotten worse in recent times (2019). There have been some very negative changes in management, and pushing policy that doesn't fit with a tech company culture at all, in a feeble attempt at increasing productivity. Not to mention shifting priorities, and that same management placing blame on those below for failure of completion of projects that were depriortized. Really it is sad, as this was a great place to work, with decent people (generally). However these changes have made the place somewhat unlivable Not to mention allowing long termers to get away with just about anything, like people saying things like "you don't know what you're doing" to others in meetings. There is almost no communication between management and employees, leaving employees with very little direction or feel for what is going on. Working here is like walking in a mine field, you never know what you are going to step in next.
