Pros

As a mid-career engineer, I was looking for a company with a reputation for treating its employees well. Based on the Post and Washingtonian Workplace rating, I decided to apply to IAI. And now after a couple of years working there, I understand why it’s regarded so well. To be sure, both publications highlighted the smaller things (i.e. the ice cream socials, free snacks/drinks) - the company’s real strengths are: the accessibility of leadership; the day-to-day appreciation of employees; and regular communications about the company’s direction. A few additional points: • My direct and sector supervisor were open to regularly meeting with me about my current role and any potential opportunities. • Most of my colleagues had significant experience (previously) and while collegial, you needed to be self-starter. You can, for the most part, create your own “role”. • Great work-life balance. You’ll be busy over a 40hr week but still maintain a great family life.

Cons

No company is perfect but I rate the company closer to a five than four. As I noted, I needed to be a self-started on many parts of my project. Growth is another pro/con since it introduces a lot of opportunities but adding so many new employees can be a bit hectic
