Pros
My manager gives me the freedom to do my job and looks out for me, assuring that I don't run afoul of any other departments. My co-workers care about our students and share my attitude that they are not an interruption of our work, but that they are the reason for it. In our office, everyone from support staff to management is treated with respect and given more than enough opportunity for professional growth, including academic and continuing education courses, attendance at conferences and on campus workshops. Overall, the University has finally adopted a more customer service centric attitude about our students, one that our department has always had.
Cons
Our VP is knowledgeable about our department's mission and believes that our work is important, but not all VP's may feel that way. Work outside of higher education may pay more, but the level of job satisfaction here more than compensates for monetary compensation.
