Pros
Great job. Great company. Hard work, long hours. Must be strong, agile, smart enough to work safely in the face of foul weather and other hazards.
Cons
Trouble is, people who have these attributes typically do not possess another key quality: the patience to deal with entirely too many grown men behaving day in and day out like children.
Big strong burly men, looking like lumberjacks but behaving as they were I constant and permanent menstruation, fickle as eighth grade schoolgirls and thinking management has no clue what goes on on their own boats. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great people here. But when they get tired, homesick, seasick, or whatever else, it's very easy to focus on the negative.
By design, everyone here is at least relatively good at handling freight. However as the saying goes, it's not a job but a lifestyle. A closer look at the crew will divest a vast array of skill sets. For example, some are especially good at spreading nasty false rumors. Others quite honestly zuk at the art of forked-tongued conniving, but are marginally more effective when revealing the truth, and by example encourage others to do the same.
At the end of the day, though, this is a great place to work. If you have what it takes to work here, do it. The pay, the benefits, the time off. Gotta count your blessings.
