Pros
The job is fun most of the time and may or may not be laid back depending on your supervisor. You get to work with the awesome wildlife of Florida. There is a lot of prescribed burning and this is a great benefit to the native species.
Cons
Low pay, little to no raises. Pay from one region to the next is not comparable. I worked in the south region and got a raise every year and then moved to the north central region and was given few if any raises and they even tried to take money away from me from previous raises. There is no higher cost of living raises given to non conservation officers in the south region vs any other regions. Conservation officers do get a cost of living raise but no one else. Pay rate is available for anyone as a public record and you can see other people in other regions with the same job as you getting raises while you stay the same. If you get promoted and there happens to be a state raise (few given) that year, you will not get it because you haven’t been in your position for a year. It is vastly unfair and not at all standardized as in other states. Most people start here then end up working for the county or the water management districts that give yearly raises. Good luck!
